The adventures of a woman who returns to an uninhabited island in search of escape…

The Islander is a new show about the adventures of a woman who returns to an uninhabited Nordic island in search of solitude and escape. It’s theatre – and it’s also a gig! Our band of dynamic storytellers plays live music and original songs, with specially made atmospheric soundscapes and short films to transport you to our beautiful, yet remote, island setting.

You’ll feel like you’re there on the island, surrounded by the sounds of the birds, winds and the sea spray.

The story takes a darker turn…storm clouds grow, the sea begins to freeze…and she comes face to face with a lynx. Ultimately, she finds happiness through rediscovering connection with others and the show ends in a rousing, celebratory and life-affirming finale, with music, song and dancing.

The Islander is rooted in the stories we’ve heard and relationships we’ve developed through our community partnerships on the Isles of Scilly, the Isle of Wight, and Pellinge (Finland).

A key influence is the work of Finnish author Tove Jansson (creator of the Moomins and The Summer Book). In 2023 we were lucky enough to have an artists’ residency on Klovharun, Tove’s own tiny island in the middle of the Baltic Sea. We’ve sprinkled in some of the amazing experiences we had there…

The Islander is a tale of resilience and survival, told with humour and warmth. It’s about the joys and challenges of island life. It invites us to reflect on how we connect to each other, as well as to the world around us.

Promoters: If desired, we’d love to offer you and your audiences a ‘mini ceilidh’ at the end of the main performance, where performers and audience come together in a communal experience of dance and music. Please ask us more about this option!
